In the first years of the holy system of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Faculty of Agriculture of Lorestan University was founded in 1369. The Department of Animal Science was approved among the first educational groups of the Faculty of Agriculture. During the last 17 years, 1 to 2 courses of associate degree graduates have been trained in the educational department of animal science. Many of the graduates of this group have succeeded in continuing their studies in undergraduate and master's degrees, which is an indication of the scientific quality of education in the group. Since 2004, the first group of undergraduate students entered the faculty. According to the policies of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and the ability of the faculty members of the department, the master's course with the two majors of animal nutrition and animal physiology was opened in 1990. In 1990, the Department of Animal Science, as the first department in the Faculty of Agriculture of Lorestan University, succeeded in obtaining a license to start a doctorate course in Animal Science with a focus on animal nutrition. Currently, in this group, students of the campus are also studying in master's and doctorate degrees.
The Department of Animal Sciences of Lorestan University now has significant educational and research facilities that have prepared the conditions for the successful education of master's and doctoral students.
A) Poultry breeding educational-research unit:
This 7,000-piece unit includes a standard hall with very suitable equipment for broiler breeding. The said hall was designed based on the latest scientific standards of broiler breeding and so far more than 10 research projects and several student theses have been implemented in it. The group is in the process of setting up an educational-research unit for laying hens on a research and educational scale, which will be put into operation by 2018.
b) Educational-research unit of cattle breeding
This unit has a capacity of 50 cows and has an area of about 2000 square meters. It has been in operation since 1375, and currently all the related courses are conducted in this unit. This unit has facilities for rearing dairy cows, heifers, calves, as well as milking parlor, fattening parlor, silo, fodder and concentrate warehouses.
c) Educational-research unit of sheep breeding
This unit has a capacity of 100 sheep and an area of about 1000 square meters. At present, the construction of the stand and spring has been done. The operation of creating individual station units to carry out research projects will be done soon. The construction of a hall belonging to the specialized ruminant laboratory in this unit to keep fistula sheep is also under study.
d) General Animal Nutrition Laboratory:
The general laboratory of animal nutrition has been put into use since the first years of the group's work to teach practical courses on animal nutrition. Currently, the mentioned laboratory, next to the central laboratory of the faculty, has enough facilities to serve the students of the master's level.
e) Poultry and ruminant specialized laboratories:
The Department of Animal Science established two specialized laboratories in the poultry and ruminant nutrition departments to obtain a license for postgraduate courses, which were put into operation in 2008.
